Day 12 Report

Day 12 - 23/4/08 - Gympie to Miva Bridge

The weir yesterday was so much fun that I paddled over it again to start the day. With blue skies and light winds coupled with cool mornings and warm days the starts are fantastic now. Mist rises from the water until it all heats up and then I appreciate finding trees to paddle under.

I saw my first Mary River turtle that stayed long enough to provide a good look. Unfortunately by the time I got the camera ready it slid off the log. It was a big one, over half a metre long from head to tail.

My first capsize wasnÕt pretty and I also filled up with water twice due to getting caught sideways on logs.

We finished after dark but covered 69km for the day. One of the local wags was there with a stubbie of Tooheys blonde each as he thought we needed a blonde on the river. His red wine was very welcome at TanziÕs that night. Tanzi Smith is a tireless worker for the Greater Mary Association who understand what the dam will do to the RAMSAR listed wetlands and Great Sandy Straits. Accommodation at TanziÕs parentÕs, Gail and Ross, was superb and we were entertained by Shawn who reckons he looks like a Russian but is an American with and Australian sense of humour.
