Day 73 Report

.Day 73 - 7/8/07 - Wilcannia at Last

Steve's Report: There were a few breakages today and another flat tyre.

Wilcannia was a very welcome sight and I had only done 30km. I really was at about the end of my tether when I walked into town. The last 6km was on bitumen but into a strong westerly head wind started to affect me after the initial elation at the easier pulling. The new shoes have broken down with holes in the soles and the balls of my feet are giving me trouble. But hey, we are finally here!

The run down look of the town belies a great underbelly of wonderful people. We are playing at being sooks tonight with a steak at the golf club and a real bed in a motel.

Jonathan's Report: For the previous two nights Steve and myself camped on the side of the road edging our way closer to Wilcannia during the day (which I might add has felt like forever due to the 3 day rain delay).

Yesterday saw Steve start the day with yet another flat tyre which was quickly changed followed by a break in the pulling frame about 500 metres further down.  Luckily Steve packed a spare in the trailer and was off, dragging his kayak towards Wilcannia no more than 20 minutes later.

We also noticed at this point a break in the frame on the trailer where a weld had snapped and so booked it in with the local mechanic in Wilcannia to get welded up.  It was nothing major but it just goes to show, even with John Crocker’s (Design/Manufacturer) superior boiler making skills, out here the roads are rough enough to hold you back.

At last Steve (being absolutely exhausted) pulled the kayak into Wilcannia at 4:00pm and no more than 30 seconds after he stopped went straight for the case of VB in the trailer.  We decided to treat ourselves to a motel room for the night as the next day was fully booked out with presentations and interviews.  Needless to say after Steve had his recovery medicine (non prescribed and bought from a bottleo) he was back to normal and ready to do it all again.

Not a good look but this is what happens
when times are tough
What does this story tell? Small trees dead. Woody
weed doing well. I don't know but the drought
must be involved somewhere
Notice the fenced off grand old building.
The post office is actually at the service station
