.Day 90 - 24/8/07 - Into Wentworth Steve's Report: Paddled into the camp site at Wentworth about 5.30pm. Spent the afternoon prior to this at the Wentworth Public School. Lots of kids this time but very well behaved and interested. Really easy day at 39km but spent about an hour trying to get prickles out of my feet from yesterday. They are really nasty, like long cats eyes that break off a long way in. The weather was perfect today as you can see in the photo of Jonathan. Jonathan's Report: Yesterday Steve started the day knowing he would do his last few steps on the road. With the water backed up from the Murray not too far ahead, it was only a 9km walk to the turn off and a further 2 km off the main road to the river. Before entering the river Steve spoke to the kids at Palinyewah State School where afterwards they all watched him enter the water from the bank. Steve did a stylish/entertaining entry where he puts the front wheel of the kayak up leaving the back wheels down transforming his boat into a downhill sled with rear wheels. After putting his skirt on (wetsuit material covering the opening in the kayak to stop water getting in) he flew down the bank submerging more than half the kayak under the water. Unfortunately Steve did not fall out of the kayak or tip it over which over half the kids were hoping would happen. The kayak popped up out of the water and Steve was off leaving the road with a graceful farewell from the Palinyewah School. (no photos were taken as we were rolling the video camera in case he fell out). Steve later that evening banked the kayak a further 34km down stream where I was waiting to drive him back to camp. This morning Steve paddled for 4 hours down the river where I picked him up as he was scheduled to be at the school in Wentworth at 2:30pm. After speaking at the school I drove him back out to the river and he continued his way towards Wentworth. Being such a beautiful day and Steve only about 12km upstream of the campsite I decided to launch one of the spare kayaks into the river and paddle upstream to meet him. It was a very nice afternoon paddle on the Darling and it was the last chance to paddle on it as Steve will enter the Murray tomorrow..
