Day 16 Report

Day 16 - 27/4/08 - Anniversary Flotilla

There were over 90 canoes and kayaks on the river. It was a great sight with so much colour. Channel Nine had a helicopter, Channel 7 was there and two gyrocopters circled over head.

At a Mary River turtle nesting bank people heard why the combination of riffles, pools and sand banks make the area unique in the world with a unique series of species. We were all given some of the glossy propaganda distributed by the government. At the end of the paddle this all went into a fire called the burning of the bullshit.

After the paddle there was a sausage sizzle and speeches at the Kandanga Hall. Interestingly the mayor spoke of "if the dam goes ahead" but this was not popular. These people want to fight and they are just starting to get warmed up.

An Aboriginal elder, said that we will fill the dam area with people if necessary, to stop the flooding.

The Kandanga pub should not be missed so some of us adjourned there for a quiet beer. It was full of people enjoying themselves with a great mix of aboriginal music and young people, including songs about the Mary.
