Day 25 Report

Day 25 - 6/5/08 - Caloundra to Bribie Island Bridge

We did two studio interviews in the morning so did not get onto the water until almost mid-day. The first was with ABC Sunshine Coast where it was great to put faces to names that I had been talking with every second day since the start of the trip. The second was with Southern Cross Ten to go to air Mothers Day morning. Kevin Ingersole (Save the Mary River Group) joined me with that one.

The tide was running out all afternoon so it was against me until the balance point in Pumicestone Passage and with me for the run down to the bridge. With only 32km to cover it was all pretty easy.

On the way up to the Mary the Glass House Mountains were a good reference landmark and here they were again. They are now behind me ands the suburbs of Brisbane are in view.

The passage is narrow in places with lots of shallow water. It is a bit like the top end of Great Sandy Straits where marine life is abundant. There were no turtles but paddling across the flats the water moves from fish life frightened by the kayak.

We had dinner at Ian Bell's place with a few of his friends. They have their own battles at Bribie. It seems that there are so many people who still think we can just do what we like with nature and everything will be fine. Not even regular lyngbia blooms (toxic algae) seem to have worked to get some people to connect the dots. To get a better view, dunes where turtles nest are being knocked down.
