Day 45 Report

.
Day 45- 10/7/07 - 38.5kms Closer to Brewarrina

This was a very interesting day. From a pleasant wooded camp site the country started to get many fewer trees.

We were lucky enough for a local farmer, Tony Schnider, to take us around his property. Tony is very passionate about his land and his water. He has a small weir on his property that he believes allows vegetation to survive in its natural state. There is some controversy over this but whether you agree with him or not, it is very small in relation to practically everything else we have seen. He also believes his clay pans (hard areas that do not support anything) are critical as they drain water to other areas thus increasing the effective rainfall in those other areas.

Temporary support crew, Dave, is a
HASH man and goes on at least a
10km run every day
Tony Schnider shows us coolibah trees
that are dying because the floodplain
waters they used to get do not happen
any more. Most people blame Cubbie for
this. Personally, I think the issue is much
greater than one farm even if it is enormous
